Why Fundraise Up's Virtuous integration defaults to opt-out for email?
Fundraise Up's integration with Virtuous is designed to simplify supporter data management and ensure compliance with email marketing regulations. One key aspect of this integration is how it handles mailing list opt-ins.
The default opt-out behavior
When a supporter completes a donation through Fundraise Up without being asked to subscribe to your mailing list, the integration will default to opting them out in Virtuous. This is because the lack of a clear mailing list consent is interpreted differently by the two systems:
- In Fundraise Up, if the mailing list question is not asked, the consent status is recorded as "Not Submitted" on the donation.
- In Virtuous, the mailing list field is a checkbox. When syncing data, the absence of a positive opt-in is treated as an opt-out, overriding any previous value.
Enabling mailing list opt-ins
To allow supporters to subscribe to your mailing list and be opted-in within Virtuous, you need to enable the Mailing list option in the campaign settings. By enabling this option, supporters will be presented with a checkbox during the checkout process, giving them the choice to subscribe to your mailing list. When a supporter opts in, their contact record in Virtuous will be updated accordingly, ensuring they receive your email communications.
