Why is the payout amount sometimes larger than the difference between the donation amount and covered fees?

If you've noticed that the payout amount for a donation is sometimes larger than the difference between the donation amount and covered fees, you may be wondering why this is happening. It's important to note that when we offer donors the option to cover fees, we calculate an estimated fee amount.

However, we do not know the exact fee amount until after the payment has been processed. For example, American Express fees are typically higher than those of Mastercard or Visa. Therefore, we calculate an approximate fee amount, and after charging the donor, both our and Stripe's fees are subtracted from the total amount, and the remaining sum is sent to the organization as the payout amount.

This is why the payout amount can sometimes be larger than the difference between the donation amount and covered fees. We strive to provide our organizations with the most accurate fee estimates possible, but some variation can occur due to differences in payment options and processing fees.
