How to create custom triggers in Google Tag Manager

Custom event triggers in Google Tag Manager allow for specific tracking and targeting of events on websites, such as button clicks and form submissions. This helps gain insights into user behavior and enhances marketing efforts.

Prerequisites

  • Google Tag Manager must be installed on your website
  • Fundraise Up’s trigger and variables template should be added to your Google Tag Manager implementation
  • You must have access to your organization’s Google Tag Manager account

To create a new custom event trigger:

  1. Open Tag Manager > Workspace > Triggers
  2. Click the New button on the top-right corner
  3. Click Trigger Configuration and choose the Custom Event trigger type
  4. Set Event name as FundraiseUp.donationComplete
  5. Choose Some Custom Event for the this trigger fires on parameter
  6. Set the required condition
    • Choose Fundraise Up Donation Is Recurring as Event
    • Change operator to equals
    • Set value as true

To create a custom event trigger for recurring donations, follow the steps listed in the document above. However, if you want to create a one-time donation trigger, repeat the same steps but set the condition value to false instead of true. This will ensure that the trigger is fired only once for one-time donations.
