Send conversion events from Fundraise Up to Microsoft Advertising

Microsoft Advertising is a pay-per-click ad platform for Bing, Yahoo, and DuckDuckGo. This article explains how to send Fundraise Up donation conversions to Microsoft Advertising using Google Tag Manager (GTM) and Fundraise Up dataLayer events.

This guide assumes your Universal Event Tracking (UET) tag is already installed. Without it, conversion tracking will not work. Learn more →

Fundraise Up sends events to the website dataLayer. GTM listens for those events and sends conversion data to Microsoft Advertising. If you are new to Fundraise Up dataLayer events, start here: Learn more →

Create a Donation conversion goal in Microsoft Advertising

  1. In Microsoft Advertising, go to Conversions > Conversion goals.

  2. Click Create.
  3. Select Manual setup, then click Next.

  4. Set Goal Category to Purchase.
  5. Choose Event as the Goal Type.

  6. Set the Goal Name to Donation.
  7. Set Revenue to Conversion action value may vary.
  8. Use this option to report the donation amount dynamically.

  9. On Set up tagging, select Yes, the UET tag was already installed on all website pages.
  10. Finish the goal setup.

Import Fundraise Up GTM variables and triggers

Import Fundraise Up user-defined variables and triggers into your GTM container. These are required to read donation data and to fire tags on Fundraise Up events. Follow the import instructions in Integrating Fundraise Up with Google Tag Manager.

Create the Microsoft Advertising UET event tag in GTM

In GTM, go to Tags > New, then select Microsoft Advertising Universal Event Tracking.

Use these settings:

  • UET variable ID = uetq
  • Track type = Custom conversion
  • Event action = Donation
  • Event category = Fundraise Up
  • Currency = USD(Fundraise Up Donation Currency)
  • Revenue value = Fundraise Up Donation Amount

Add these parameters:

  • transaction_id = Fundraise Up Donation ID
  • id = Fundraise Up Campaign ID

Set Triggering to Fundraise Up Donation Complete, then click Save.

Microsoft Advertising requires a UET config/page view tag to run on every page. If it is missing, event tags may not fire.

Publish and confirm

Publish your changes in GTM using Submit / Publish. After publishing, completed Fundraise Up donations should fire a Microsoft Advertising conversion for the Donation goal.

Track additional Fundraise Up events (optional)

You can repeat the same GTM pattern for other events, such as checkout open and checkout close. Create a new Microsoft Advertising goal for each event you want to track, then create a matching GTM UET event tag and trigger for that goal.
