Understanding Stripe Metadata for Fundraise Up Donations

Stripe metadata for Fundraise Up donations

When processing donations, Fundraise Up sends only the Donation ID as metadata to Stripe. This approach maximizes donor privacy and data security by minimizing the information transmitted to external systems.

Why only Donation ID?

Sending just the Donation ID as metadata provides a unique and unambiguous link between each Stripe transaction and the corresponding donation record in Fundraise Up without exposing personal or detailed transaction information in Stripe. All sensitive donor and campaign data remains protected within Fundraise Up and is not shared with external payment processors or third-party applications.

This policy became standard for all organizations connecting Stripe after October 11, 2023. Older accounts may still see additional fields (such as Account, Campaign, Designation, Email, etc.) included in Stripe metadata. This legacy approach applied only to accounts created before this date.

Key benefits

  • Enhanced privacy and security: Fundraise Up protects donors and organizations from potential data exposure in third-party systems by reducing metadata to just the Donation ID.
  • PCI DSS compliance: Limiting the data transmitted to Stripe supports compliance with industry security standards.
  • Clear data reconciliation: The Donation ID can be used to search for and cross-reference donations in Fundraise Up, ensuring accurate matching without revealing sensitive information.

Where to find full donation details?

All detailed donor, campaign, and payment information is available securely in your Fundraise Up dashboard and exports. If your organization needs additional data for reporting or analytics, use the export feature, Stripe is used solely as a payment gateway, and the minimal Donation ID is enough for reconciliation.
