How to update a recurring donation’s payment method

Supporters and organization users can update the payment method used for an existing recurring donation. This article explains both available methods: updating the payment method through the supporter’s Donor Portal, or updating it directly from the Fundraise Up Dashboard.

Update the payment method through the Donor Portal

Supporters can update their own payment method at any time.

If a supporter needs help logging in, direct them to:

How can supporters access their Donor Portal?

1. Open the recurring donation

Once supporters are logged in to Donor Portal home page, their recurring donations appear on the right side under Recurring donations.

The supporter should select the recurring donation that needs an updated payment method.

2. Edit the payment method

Depending on the plan status:

  • If the payment method has failed, a red warning banner appears along with an Edit payment method button.
  • If the plan is active, the supporter can update the payment method by selecting Edit in the Details section.

3. Enter new payment details

The supporter can then:

  1. Choose to add a new payment method (for example, New credit card).
  2. Enter the required card or payment information.
  3. Select Save changes.

Future installments will be charged to the updated payment method.

Update the payment method from the Fundraise Up Dashboard

Organization users can update a supporter’s payment method directly from the Dashboard when needed, for example, when collecting new card details securely over the phone in accordance with internal policies.

1. Locate the supporter’s recurring plan

There are two ways to find a recurring plan:

Option 2: Use the Recurring page filters

  1. Open Recurring in the sidebar menu.
  2. Use filters such as Supporter to search by name or email.
  3. Select the recurring plan that requires a payment method update.

2. Edit the payment method

Once inside the recurring plan:

  1. Select Edit payment details from the right-side menu.
  2. In the popup window, scroll to Payment method.
  3. Choose New credit card (or the appropriate payment method option).
  4. Enter the new payment method details.
  5. Select Save changes.

The new payment method will be used for future installments.
