Marketing consent
Collect permissions to contact your supporters through email, SMS, phone calls, and other channels.
Marketing consents, available in campaign settings, help organizations obtain and manage communication permissions from their supporters. This ensures compliance with GDPR and other data protection regulations while maintaining a smooth donation process.
Why marketing consents are important
Organizations operating in GDPR-affected regions need explicit, informed consent from supporters before any form of communication. Without proper consent management, organizations risk penalties and reduced supporter trust.
For organizations in regions with less strict requirements, such as the United States, the process remains flexible. This ensures that organizations can maintain their existing workflows while adopting GDPR compliance where needed.
Configure marketing consents
Marketing consent settings are configured at the campaign level. There is no bulk configuration option for all campaigns.
To access the settings, go to Campaigns > [Your campaign] > Settings > Marketing consent.
Choose from these three consent types to match your organization’s needs: No consent, General consent, or Customized consent.
No consent
This option doesn’t request communication permission from supporters. The checkout form proceeds without asking for marketing consent.
When to use:
- Your organization operates in regions without strict consent requirements.
- You have other mechanisms for obtaining communication consent.
- You don’t plan to contact supporters for marketing purposes.
General consent
This option requests overall permission to communicate with supporters, regardless of the channel. It adds a single checkbox to your checkout form.
When to use:
- You want a straightforward consent process.
- Your communication strategy spans multiple channels.
- You don’t need channel-specific permissions.
Customized consent
This option lets supporters choose their preferred communication channels. They can consent to email, SMS, phone calls, postal mail, and social media separately.
When to use:
- You operate in GDPR-affected regions.
- You want detailed control over communication preferences.
- Your outreach strategy uses multiple channels.
When you enable phone, SMS, and postal mail consent options, these checkboxes display only if supporters provide this information in the checkout form.
Modify consent appearance
When configuring General consent, you have several options to tailor the consent experience. Add a Checkbox text that explains what supporters are agreeing to, and include an optional link to your privacy policy or terms. You can also provide Additional info to help supporters understand how their consent will be used.
When setting up Customized consent, you can add an optional Description of up to 500 characters.
To make consent collection more targeted, enable the option Show only in regions where laws require explicit user consent. When this option is enabled, consent forms will only appear to supporters who are physically located in regions with strict consent regulations at the time of donation.
This applies to the following regions:
- EU member states
- EEA (Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein)
- UK
- Switzerland
- California (USA)
- Canada
- Australia
- Brazil
- India
- South Korea
This helps meet regional compliance requirements while keeping the checkout process smoother for supporters in other areas.
You can set consent checkboxes as Checked by default, though this should be used carefully to ensure compliance with local regulations.
Test your configuration
Before launching your campaign:
- Click Preview to see how consent options appear in the checkout form.
- Test different scenarios to ensure the configuration matches your needs.
- Balance compliance requirements with a smooth donation experience.
How to manage supporter consent
Supporters have flexibility in how they handle consent during the donation process. They can choose to skip the consent step entirely, and their donation will still process normally.
After a donation is complete, any changes to consent settings need to be managed through your organization. While supporters can’t modify their consent through the Donor Portal, they can contact you to request changes. Your team can then update their preferences through the Dashboard:
- Go to the Donations or Recurring tab from the top menu.
- Find the donation using Supporter ID or name.
- Open donation details.
- Access Personal information from the right-side menu.
- Click Edit.
- Scroll down and adjust Marketing consent settings from the dropdown menu.
When consent is updated on a recurring plan, it only applies to future installments, leaving consent settings in past installments unchanged.
