iDEAL

Learn about iDEAL, a common payment method in Western Europe.

iDEAL is a Netherlands-based payment method that allows supporters in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg to make donations using their online banking credentials.

iDEAL is the most popular online payment method in the Netherlands, with a share of online transactions close to 55%.

Recurring giving with SEPA

For supporters to be able to create recurring plans when paying with iDEAL, you must also have SEPA enabled as a payment method.

iDEAL is a one-time payment method where supporters are required to authenticate each donation. To use iDEAL for a recurring plan, Fundraise Up charges the supporter 0.01 EUR through iDEAL to collect their bank details. Once the supporter has authenticated the charge, Fundraise Up refunds the charge and stores the supporter’s IBAN in a SEPA Direct Debit payment method. iDEAL is used to process a recurring plan’s first installment, and then SEPA Direct Debit is used as the payment method for subsequent installments. This is why it is necessary to enable SEPA Direct Debit when adding iDEAL as a payment method.

iDEAL is not compatible with daily or weekly recurring giving frequencies. When these frequencies are selected, iDEAL will not be shown as an available payment method in the Checkout form or Donor Portal.

iDeal in social media browsers

When supporters access your donation page through an in-app browser in social media apps, such as Facebook or Instagram, they cannot use iDeal as a payment method. This occurs because in-app browsers do not support the special authentication window that iDeal requires. Be sure to inform supporters that they must open your donation page in a standard web browser, such as Chrome or Safari, to complete their donation using iDeal.
