Learn about iDEAL, a common payment method in the Netherlands.

iDEAL is a Netherlands-based payment method that allows donors to complete their donations using their bank credentials. All major Dutch banks are members of Currence, the scheme that operates iDEAL, making it the most popular online payment method in the Netherlands with a share of online transactions close to 55%.

iDEAL redirects donors to their online banking environment to authenticate a payment using a second factor of authentication and there is immediate notification about the success or failure of a payment.

Enable iDEAL

You can add iDEAL and other payment methods from the Fundraise Up Dashboard without any changes to your installation code. Stripe determines the list of supported payment methods to show each customer by evaluating the currency, payment method restrictions, and other parameters.

Recurring giving

iDEAL is a single use payment method where donors are required to authenticate each donation. To enable the use of iDEAL for recurring giving, Fundraise Up charges your donor 0.01 EUR through iDEAL to collect their bank details. Once the donor has authenticated the charge, Fundraise Up refunds the charge and stores the donor’s IBAN in a SEPA Direct Debit payment method. iDEAL is used to process a recurring plan’s first installment, and then SEPA Direct Debit is used as the payment method for subsequent installments. This is why it is necessary to enable SEPA Direct Debit when adding iDEAL as a payment method.

Incompatible recurring frequencies: iDEAL is not compatible with daily or weekly recurring giving frequencies. When these frequencies are selected, iDEAL will not be shown as an available payment method in Checkout or Donor Portal.

Donations made using iDEAL can be refunded up to 180 days after the original donation date.
