Giving Station quick start guide
Get an iPad and a Stripe card reader ready to accept donations at your next event.
In-person giving lets your organization accept donations face to face, through the Fundraise Up app on a phone or tablet. Supporters give with a card or digital wallet, and their donations are recorded in the same account as your online giving, so they appear in your reports and CRM.
Follow these steps to set up an iPad and a Stripe card reader and take donations at your first event.
Two ways to take donations
On an iPad, you can take donations in two ways:
- Supporters give on their own. The iPad stays in one spot, such as a registration desk or a stand beside an exhibit, and supporters can donate without help from your team. In the app, this mode is called Giving Station.
- Your team takes each donation. A staff member or volunteer keeps the iPad and enters the amount, and the supporter can tap their card, phone, or watch on the reader. This suits a staffed setting, such as a gala floor. In the app, this mode is called Tap to Donate.
The steps below explain how to set up a Giving Station. For the Tap to Donate mode, see Set up Tap to Donate.
Before you start
Have these ready before you set up the iPad:
- A Stripe card reader. An iPad always needs one to take donations in the app.
- An Apple Account. You need one to set up the iPad and install the app. We recommend an Apple Account that your organization controls, rather than a staff member’s personal account.
- A Fundraise Up login. The app uses the email and password for your Dashboard, not your Apple Account.
- In-Person Giving turned on. To turn it on, add your organization’s address in Settings > In-Person Giving. One address covers all your events.
- A Giving Station campaign. Create a campaign in Campaigns > Giving Station and configure it before your event.
- An internet connection. Use Wi-Fi or a mobile hotspot, both for setup and at the event.
- A stand or table mount. Use it to keep the iPad in place at the station.
- Approval from your IT team. If your organization manages its devices, check with IT before you set up the iPad. A device management policy can lock the screen between donations.
Charge the iPad and the reader fully before you start.
Step 1. Set up the iPad
For a new iPad, follow all the steps. If your iPad is already in use, check that it matches steps 2–4, then go to step 5.
- Turn on the iPad and follow the setup screens. Only the Appearance, Apple Account, and Multitasking screens (described below) affect the app. On the others, choose any option.
- On the Appearance screen, keep the text and icon size at Default. With a larger size, the app does not display correctly.
- On the Apple Account screen, sign in. Without an Apple Account, you can’t install the app.
- On the Multitasking screen, choose Full Screen Apps, so the Fundraise Up app fills the whole screen instead of opening in a window.
- Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and choose Never, so the screen stays on between donations.
- Go to Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access and turn on Guided Access. This iPad setting keeps supporters inside the Fundraise Up app until someone enters a passcode.
- Tap Passcode Settings > Set Guided Access Passcode and enter a passcode that is different from the iPad passcode.
Step 2. Install the app and connect the reader
To install the app and connect the reader:
- On the iPad, open the App Store.
- Search for the Fundraise Up app.
- Tap Get to install it.
- Open the app. When it asks for location access, allow it. Stripe needs location access to process in-person payments.
- Tap Get started and log in with your Fundraise Up email and password.
- Tap Giving Station in the menu at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Set up reader.
- Place the Stripe card reader next to the iPad.
- Press and hold the button on the reader for about 5 seconds, until the green lights blink back and forth.
- When the iPad shows a Bluetooth pairing request, tap Allow.
When the reader connects, its lights will flash three times. The reader stays connected to this iPad until you disconnect it, so you don’t need to connect it again before each event.
Step 3. Run the station at your event
At the venue, place the iPad in its stand with the reader next to it, and plug the iPad in.
To launch the station:
- In the app, tap Giving Station in the menu at the bottom of the screen and open your campaign.
- Tap Launch Giving Station.
- Set a 4‑digit operator PIN. The PIN will keep supporters on the donation screen, and your team will need it to close the station. You must set a new PIN at each launch.
- Triple-click the top button, or the Home button on an iPad that has one. This turns on Guided Access, which locks the iPad to the app, so supporters can’t close the app or open other apps.
The station is now ready for supporters. If the iPad runs out of battery or restarts, Guided Access will turn off. Turn it on again before the next donation.
To close the station after the event:
- Press and hold the bottom-right corner of the screen for 3 seconds.
- Enter the operator PIN and tap Exit Giving Station.
- Triple-click the top button, or the Home button on an iPad that has one.
- Enter the Guided Access passcode and tap End.
The iPad is no longer locked to the app, and you can use other apps on it.
Event-day checklist
On the day of your event, check that:
- The iPad and the reader are charged, and the iPad is plugged in.
- The internet works where the station stands, not only where you set it up.
- The reader is connected and next to the iPad.
- The station is launched and Guided Access is on.
- Someone on site knows the operator PIN and the Guided Access passcode.
- A member of your team stays near the station.
- A printed QR code that links to your online donation form is near the iPad as a backup.
